LEGO capes get frayed around the edges when they get a bit used. New capes look great, but genuine LEGO capes cost a lot as spare parts.
Rather than tracing around an old cape, try using this template pasting it in to Word or Paint software, then tracing onto the material you want from the screen, or print it out.
The picture above is an image, that can be copied and pasted into Word (or Paint) software.
You might need to resize the image to fit (check it against your current cape size), but it will probably be right as 100% in Word.
If you want to add symbols (like knight's insignia etc) then copy and paste images into Paint and Edit Paste other images on to it.
In another blog soon, I will look at the material some people have used. Some people use paper for simplicity, but cloth usually looks more like the standard LEGO capes. Unfortunately woven cloth tends to fray at the edges, so some people treat it with materials painted on. In the meantime, there are some good ideas here:

Custom minifigs - DC Comics superheroes
Collecting and making your own mixture of parts from official LEGO minifigs is great. Some people also make their own custom minifigs, by painting and modifying standard LEGO parts.
This collection is by Julian Fong (click on the name for a link to his bio). He has done Computer Science, and works at Pixar. Have a look at a more detailed version of the photo above, and some of his other great stuff at http://www.flickr.com/photos/levork/

The value of careful lighting when photographing your LEGO creations
Brian Williams: Indiana Jones Layout at Brickworld 2009
A great example of how lighting can dramatically improve the end result when photographing LEGO creations.
More of Brian's creations, including, his entire Indiana Jones layout can be found on his Flickr photostream.
Lighting can be added with LEGO (R) Power Functions lights, or there are other options like LifeLites usually using LEDs and batteries for safety and small size. See how he has made a flickering flame effect at http://www.flickr.com/photos/brian_williams/4956564745/

When a kids game plays/solves a kids game?!
LEGO Robot Solves Any Rubik’s Cube In Less Than 12 Seconds
The famous Cube Stormer creation is from Mike Dobson, aka Robotics Solutions. Not only is it made entirely out of Legos, it can solve any 3×3x3 rubik’s cube in less than twelve seconds. Often it can finish in less than five!
YouTube clip (with fast NXT cube loader) can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1y1m6YLnu8&feature=related
After this I went on to watch a Sudoku puzzle solving NXT robot, that analyzes the puzzle, then writes in the answers. Fantastic!
It is slow at first, but they speed it up later to make it more interesting. Must see athttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp8Y2yjV4fU

Doctor Who in LEGO

Lots of people at the Camberwell Sunday Market ask me when LEGO will make Doctor Who from LEGO. Nothing coming that I know of, but many people are making their own. Look at this one from LEGOLAND in England.

A small model of the Doctor, Jack Harkness, Davros, and the TARDIS. It was hard to spot. Look at the bottom right corner of Lego London. A Lego Dalek was also spotted on the HSBC building.

Another bigger Dalek:
An article from Wired magazine on it at http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2008/06/daily-lego-exte/ and a link to see 33 step-by-step picture guide for how to build it.

What does "the LEGO man" do on a Sunday afternoon after the Sunday Market?
a) Web browsing for more LEGO ideas. Found the Avatar Battle Helicopter made in LEGO made by barebos.
It is just over a minute long - video also shows how the steering joystick controls the fans tilt. Great door actions too! See it on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnuv-DGsSWE
or still photos on Brickstream here:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=420825
I then went to look at more of barebos' YouTube stuff and found The most useless MOC ever! (very funny) and the amazing Working Lego V8, 32 valve engine As he describes it,
"Real working (electronic) V8 engine made from Lego Technic. This is not a Lego set, but I completely designed and build it myself. There is about 300 hours of work in this model. Enjoy!
For pictures and building instructions check out this link: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=276743
For the parts list: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/blakbird/Renders/MOCs/V-8/parts_list.pdf"
That reminds me - I need to put a link in for Brickshelf in the Useful Links at the top right of the blog for you to use.
b) I just bought "Star Wars - The Clone Wars - The Visual Guide", written by Jason Fry. Another good one from the publishers Dorting Kindersley. It's not LEGO, but .... it maybe a good book to help you explain to parents who-is-who, and why you just MUST have that particular LEGO Star Wars minifig! Its shelf price was $32.95 at Borders, but I got 30% off with a Borders special members deal that was emailed to me. If you buy books from Borders sometimes, I have found joining can save some money. Go to their home page & put in your email address. They will send you weekly recommendations and many special offers and discount vouchers.
